Assessment of Dam-Wetland Functions Using Hydrogeomorphic Method

It has been known that the wetland has various functions such as biodiversity, flood control, reduction of greenhouse gas, etc. And so we have tried to do a lot of efforts for wetland conservation and restoration. A wetland construction around a dam could be an example for wetland conservation and restoration in Korea. In this study, we defined a dam-wetland which includes wetlands around a dam and dam reservoir and so we may understand the characteristics of dam-wetland for utilization of dam as wetland. This study assess the functions of the dam-wetlands using HGM (Hydrogeomorphic) method which can consider hydraulic and hydrologic, topographical, ecological characteristics of the wetland. The study sites are Upo wetland, Boryung-dam, Yongdam-dam, and Jangheung-dam in Korea. Here Upo wetland is a natural wetland. For the functional assessment, we modified an original HGM method for applying it to the dam-wetland in Korea. When compared average functional index of Upo wetland which is a reference wetland with those of the dam wetlands and the estimated indices of the dam wetlands were in the range of 0.53∼0.65. It describes that the dam wetlands are providing the functions of 53∼63% of Upo wetland.
