College Students’ English Requests in Discourse Completion Task and Chatting

초록

The aim of this paper was to investigate Korean learners’ ability to perform the speech act of requests by using two differing data-gathering methods. A study was conducted in which two groups of EFL students were engaged in discourse completion task(DCT) and chatting for data collection. The results of the study showed that two groups of learners performed requests similarly by choosing many strategies in direct level and relying on limited types of downgraders such as politeness marker, ‘please’ and tense, which indicated that learners lacked pragmatic abilities, making impolite requests and creating pragmatic errors. It was concluded that since requests from DCT were much similar to those from chatting in terms of strategies, downgraders, and supportive moves, DCT was seen as a proper tool to capture stereotypical, representative characteristics of requests in a fast and effective manner in case natural data are unavailable in L2 speech act research.
