Empirical Analysis on Carbon Emission Comparison by Different Aircraft Type on Air Cargo Transportation

초록

The objective of this study is to analyze the carbon emissions per cargo ton-km on aviation transportation, using actual operating data from single flights. The methodology used to calculate carbon emissions on aviation transportation is in line with the recommendations of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and utilizes Tier2b as a more precise method. The results of the analysis show that for cargo loaded on a B777 airplane on the same route (Incheon-L.A. v.v), the B777 passenger airplane emitted 0.678 CO2 kg per ton-km, while the cargo airplane emitted 0.601 CO2 kg per ton-km, resulting in a 12.8% increase in carbon emissions per ton-km for the passenger airplane. When comparing different cargo airplanes on the same routes (Incheon-L.A. & Anchorage v.v) with the B747-800 freighter and B777 freighter, the B777 freighter’s carbon emissions were found to be less than the B747-800 freighter’s for eastbound from Incheon, where the load factor is high. This result is in line with the common understanding of the B777’s better fuel efficiency than the B747- 800 freighter. However, for westbound from the U.S. region, the results show a different trend, where the B777’s emissions are higher than the B747-800’s. This is caused by the B777’s longer operating distance and higher fuel consumption, as well as the low load factor in this direction. This finding implies that route operating and administrating load factor are also important factors in reducing carbon emissions per cargo ton-km.
