Grain refinement and strengthening of Zr through equal channel angular pressing and generation of twins

초록

Zirconium of a hexagonal close packed a phase was grain-refined through two independent methods, cold rolling that generates a high density of twins and equal channel angular pressing. Random grain boundaries and twin boundaries produced by the two respective methods, as confirmed by TEM and EBSD, divided the microstructure into regions of 270㎚ and 15㎛, respectively. As a result of the grain refinement, the hardness and the compressive yield strength increased, the trend of which conformed to the Hall-Petch equation, thereby asserting the effectiveness of both type of boundaries in resisting the onset of plastic deformation.
