Background Shur Ki-heun (born 1953) is a graphic designer and design educator. After joining Kyungwon University as a professor in 1988, he conducted design practice and design education at the same time for over 30 years until he retired in 2018. It is worth paying attention to the integrated design education case of Shur Ki-heun in that he actively sought and practiced a new paradigm of design education in a situation where interest in the design field expanded from industry to culture and the importance of multidisciplinary design research was emphasized. Methods This research was mainly carried out by reviewing literature and conducting interviews. The design works and activities of Shur Ki-heun and references related to his design education were investigated. The interview with Shur Ki-heun was the basis, and the writings of Kwon Hyuk-soo, who has been in exchange with him since the 1980s, was referred to. It also held a round-table talk with Seo Ki-heun's colleagues and early disciples. Results Shur Ki-heun's integrated design education is divided into before and after the Sotdae project. The former is from 1989 to the first semester of 2001, during which time he started from editorial design and expanded the scope of his classes to community design. The latter is from the second semester of 2001 to 2018. During this period, Shur Ki-heun started a class under the title of ‘initiative to design culture’ as a 21st century design education model for future designers and practiced it until retirement. The main characteristics of Shur Ki-heun’s integrated design education spanning the two periods are as follows. First, the program was intended to present an integrated model of design practice and design education. Second, an attempt was conducted to revitalize the designer community through relation-oriented design education. Third, the social role of designers as cultural producers was emphasized. Fourth, drawing and illustration were actively used as design education tools. Conclusions Modern design education in South Korean universities started after liberation, but the goal, methodology, and curriculum of design education were not systematized until the late 1980s. Seeing that design education needs to be improved, Seo Ki-heun developed a future-oriented integrated design education program that fits the needs of the times and socio-cultural context by utilizing his field experience as a designer © This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/), which permits unrestricted educational and non-commercial use, provided the original work is properly cited
