Koreans' consciousness about the safety: An indigenous analysis

The purpose of this research is to examine Korean's safety consciousness by adopting the indigenous psychology approach. More superficially, the main aim of this research is to examine the safety consciousness in relation to social representations and the characteristics of safety behaviors. The participants responded to a set of open-ended questionnaire. They are told to write: (1) what was their most severe accident, (2) the damage incurred from that accident, (3) the cause of the accident, (4) the types of assistance they received after the accident, and (5) the types of safe guidelines to prevent accidents. A total of 2,810 Korean students and adults (students=1,074, adults=1,736) participated in this study. The results are as follows: First, the most frequent accident in Korea is car accident. Second, the peoples carelessness and mistakes are found to be the cause of the accident. Third, family support is found to be the most important social support received after the accidents. Finally, the safe guidelines to prevent accidents in Korea are being conscious about safe environments and being personally cautious as individuals will be discussed.
