Matrix metalloprotease-1 and tissue inhibitor of metalloprotease-1 levels in pleural effusions of different origins

MMP-1 is a proteolytic enzyme that are essentially involved in the turnover of the extracellular matrix. Its activity is counterbalanced by specific antagonists, TIMP. Our data suggests that the pleural MMP-1 levels were higher in parainfectious effusion than in malignant and in transudate.
