Human endothelial cells express the functional receptor to leptin, the product of ob gene associated with atherosclerosis and hyperleptinemia.Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatpry process accompanying accumulation of ECM protein. It has been considered that imbalance in matrix turnover can contribute the initiation and progression of athrosclerosis. Our results suggest that leptin induce directly MMP2/TIMP2 overproduction an MCP-1 production in cultured HUVEC and leptin can contribute atherosclerotic process through activation of MMP/TIMP system and MCP-1 overproduction
