Numerical technique to include fluid domain has been known that almost unique way to consider the fluid effect in modeling fluid-structure interaction simulations, but requires heavy computation time under high performance computing system. This paper introduces a new approach without including fluid elements where it simulates hydro-forces on striking and struck ships. This innovation came to be possible by imbedding a Fortran user-subroutine code into a commercial finite element code. We applied the user-subroutine to a simplified box model to see the same motion responses. The simulation results well coincided with coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian analysis results with dramatically reduced computing cost. The user-subroutine was also applied to simulate a simple ship-to-ship collision analysis. The list angle and damage extents were compared for the cases with and without the user-subroutine. The effects of hydro-forces were significant in terms of the list angle and damage extent. © 2020 Taylor and Francis Group, London.
