Preparation and Properties of vinyl alcohol group containing Polymer/MWNT Nanocomposite

This study investigated the preparation, properties and applicability of various vinyl alcohol (VOH) group containing nanocomposites with high porosity through simple saponification method using electron-beam irradiated multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT). PVAc, EVA40, EVA28 and their blends are each dissolved in toluene and MWNT was dispersed in polymer solution. Followed by the polymer suspension was precipitated and saponified in alkaline non-solvent. The prepared particles have a highly porous sponge-like structure of connected matrix polymer and MWNT. At low polymer/MWNT concentrations, the particles were less porous and the precipitated polymer phase had a granular structure. While at high concentrations, void porosity was increased and the precipitated polymer phase became a sponge-like structure. Since the nanocomposites prepared by this method have highly porous, good hydrophilicity, good mechanical strength and thermal properties, they can be used for industrial applications such like polymeric filler, electro-conductive materials and thin film membranes.
