초록

The purpose of the study was to investigate the anti-obesity and hypolipidemic effect of lotus seed ethanol extract(LSE) in rats fed high fat diet. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were separately fed with a normal diet (N group) (based on the AIN-93G diet) and a high-fat diet for 7 weeks, and then rats fed high fat diet were subdivided into two groups (high fat diet, HF group; high fat diet + LSE, HFS group) and treated for another 7 weeks. Each group was composed of 10 rats, and LSE (400mg/kg/day) was orally administrated to HFS group and the same amount of saline solution was orally administered to N and HF groups. Relative weights of epididymal adipose tissues were significantly lower in N and HFS groups compared to HF group. The high fat diet caused an increase in serum total cholesterol and triglyceride levels and the administration of LSE for 7 weeks decreased serum levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride, when compared to the HF group. The serum leptin level was higher in the HF group compared to the N group, but the LSE decreased the level. Our data suggest that LSE can be considered as an anti-obesity reagent that is effective for suppressing adipose tissue weight and decreasing lipid profile.
