Linguistic communication has beenconsidered as conveying explicit and/or implicit meanings of words andsentences. However, communication can be done based on linguistic forms. Inthis paper, we explore translations of the text in which linguistic forms play asignificant role, comparing subtitle translation and book translation. Although thetranslated text has been considered similar to the source text in meaning, thereare cases where meaning translation is not enough to convey the cognitiveeffects intended by the original writer. When formal properties are used forsome cognitive effects, they need to be reflected in translations. Just like othercommunication, this translation is constrained by consideration of optimalrelevance (maximal relevance compatible with the speaker’s ability andpreference), of which the notion is defined and used in relevance theory. Inother words, as long as they are willing to and able to do so, translators dealwith a formal property used for some cognitive effects so that readers canachieve maximal cognitive effects from the translation with minimal processingeffort.
