Effects of Astaxanthin Production by Nitrogen and Proteose-Peptone Deficiencies in Haematococcus pluvialis

Various conditions such as nitrogen and proteose-peptone deficiencies and different light intensities were tested to stimulate astaxanthin production. Final cell concentration in the control medium, after 20 days of culture, was significantly higher than in any other deficient media and chlorophyll concentration in control medium also higher than in others. Although cell concentration was lower under 82 mE/m2/S light condition than 25 mE/m2/S light condition, carotenoids concentration in cell was about 2 times higher. Change of specific growth rate is very novel, during cell number increase, cell volume is not changed and on the other hand during cell number is not changed, cell volume increased. Considering of cell concentration and productivity of astaxanthin in various media under different light condition, H. pluvialis should be cultured under two stage system. Control medium is good for growth and nitrogen and proteose-peptone deficiencies medium under high light is good for astaxanthin production.
