Express Train: Yet Another Link Level Protocol for Large Bandwidth Networks

As a bandwidth of a communication link increases it appears that we can expect the high throughput data communication by accommodating a large frame over it. However, for this environments, an error control scheme must be considered carefully since number of frames retransmitted due to error in transmitted frames may decrease significantly the throughput. In this paper we propose a data link level protocol with an efficient error control scheme to achieve a high throughput via high-speed large bandwidth communication links. A throughput analysis based on the closed form expressions is investigated and compared with that of each GBN(Go-Back-N) and CPM(Check Point Mode) - the well known two data link level protocols.
