The effects of conditioned media from periostieum on proliferation, matrix synthesis and phenotype of the rabbit articular chondrocyte

Very few experimental studies regarding the effect of periosteium on chondroycte has been reported todays. The purpose of this study was evaluation of the biological function of the periostium on chondrocyte in vitro culture condition. In conclusion, chondrocyte proliferation, proteoglycan synthesis, and type II collagen were more increased in media containing periostium explants cultured media than in the serum free media. It showed that 10% FBS has synergistic effect withperiosteal conditioned media. These results demonstrate that periostium may have a biological function as well as the mechanical barrier preventing chondrocytes leakage when it is used for the autologous chondroyctes transplantation.
