SnO2-core/V2O5-shell nanorods were synthesized using a two-step process: the thermal evaporation of Sn powders and the sputter-deposition of V2O5. The core-shell nanorods were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The diameters of these core-shell nanorods varied from 80-120 nm, with the shell layer thickness in a range of 7-13 nm. The cores and shells of the annealed core-shell nanorods comprised a single crystal tetragonal-structured SnO2 and a single crystal orthorhombic-structured V2O5, respectively. The PL measurement exhibited a yellow emission band centered at around 590 nm. Our results also manifested that the yellow emission was further enhanced by thermal annealing and that it was much more significantly enhanced by annealing in an oxidative atmosphere than annealing in a reducing atmosphere. The yellow emission was more significantly enhanced by annealing in an oxidative atmosphere than annealing in a reducing atmosphere.
