Novel Enhancement of Photoluminescence in Cross-Junction of Core-Shell Hybrid Organic Nanowires Coated with Au Nanotubes

We reported a novel enhancement of photoluminescence (PL) characteristics using cross-junction of core-shell hybrid organic nanowires (NWs) of light-emitting poly (3-methylthiophene) (P3MT) NW coated with Au nanotubes (NTs) (P3MT/Au-NTs). We fabricated core-shell hybrid NWs coated with Au NTs through a sequentially electrochemical polymerization methods based upon an anodic alumina oxide (AAO) nanoporous template. The formation of hybrid core-shell NWs of Au-P3MT was confirmed through transmission electron microscope (TEM) and high-resolution-TEM (HR-TEM) images. Using a high–resolution laser confocal microscope (LCM), we observed the significantly enhanced PL of P3MT/Au-NTs. We analyze that the enhancement of LCM PL of the hybrid nanostructures might originate from energy transfer and/or charge transfer in a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) coupling, supported by ultraviolet and visible absorption spectra.3) Additionally, the PL intensity of the cross-junction hybrid nanowires was much higher than that of the hybrid single NW. This remarkable enhancement of PL efficiency in the cross-junction NWs of P3MT/Au-NTs can be explained in terms of a nanoscale local electric field enhancement effects.
