초록

Conventional optical microscopy is not ideal for in-situ observation of metallic solidification, due to the high solidification temperatures and the opacity of solid metal. To address this, an innovative in-situ imaging technique was developed utilizing a white X-ray source generated from the synchrotron beamline at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory in Korea. Dendrite structure parameters such as the tip radius, arm spacing, and mushy-zone length, as a function of the solidification rate, were measured directly from in-situ images. To correlate the dendrite growth behavior, microstructure, and material properties, the microstructural properties were further analyzed via optical and electron microscopy.
