A Study on Urban Regeneration Plan Through a Geographical Inquiry into the Site of the Old Wang-sip-ri Gyeongsung Orbit Train

The study departs from a criticism on the paradoxical state of urban regeneration projects currently in progress, made by one dimensional approach which rather produces a sense of placeless in the present city, than creates a new sense of place. Pointing out the urban agriculture, one of the urban regeneration contents, which tends to be weighted toward a development on such low level programs and contents as coercing experiences of farming roof gardens or vegetable patch, the study attempts to borrow Yi-Fu Tuan's concept of Topo-philia and his geographical thinking, and to verify the fact that farmland is not only a primary factor that helps the urban identity formed but also a place where human beings make emotional ties with all physical environments. Targeting the Wangsipri Gyeongsung Orbit site which had been deleted by urban expansion, and the linear building block built along the railway trace, the study intends to investigate the physical, socio-cultural discontinuity between the site and the surroundings, and the degree of deterioration of the local community, to explore ways of recovering the sense of place, and to suggest a platform for urban agriculture as a new urban community.
