Optimal sensor locations for long-term structural health monitoring

The paper presents a methodology to determine optimal accelerometer locations for long-term structural health monitoring where structural condition is assessed by modal system identification. A Fisher information matrix in terms of mode shape sensitivity is formulated with respect to structural parameters by the maximum likelihood approach. A scheme of effective independence distribution vector has been applied to determine optimal accelerometer locations. To reflect the role of critical members for the structural safety, a way of implementing importance weight in selecting sensor locations is proposed. Simulation studies have been carried out on a multi-girder multi-span bridge to examine the proposed algorithm.
