The Urban Landscape in Inchon: A Quest for Regeneration Strategies of a Lost Cultural Heritage

Assuming an arriere-garde position, today’s architecure can be upheld as a critical practice; a critical practice, that is either to keep away from the Enlightenment myth of progress and from a reactionary, unrealistic impulse to return to architectonic forms of pre-industrial past. This study intends to examine the strategy for qualitative urban development established by the equilibrium of the vernacular and the cityscape, to investigate the theoretical approach how to interpret the interrelationship between a city and architecture, place and time through methods of superimposition and programmatic transition, and for architecture, in an arriere-garde point of view, to intervene in existing urban fabric to achieve a well-balanced postmodern urban landscape.
