Abstract The study was conducted to evaluate a body weight control program consisting of diet, exercise and behavior modification with supplementation of sea tangle (20 g/day) on 25 female college students during an 8-week period. The subjects were given nutrition education and counsel once per week. Body composition, dietary habits, blood lipid profiles, nutrient intake, self-reported quality of life and depression were assessed before and after the program. At baseline average age, body weight and BMI were 21.1±1.3 years, 59.8±7.4 kg and 23.2±2.1 kg/m2, respectively. After 8-weeks, there were significant decreases in body weight, body fat, percent body fat, waist-hip ratio and BMI along with improvements in dietary habits. Serum lipid profiles were not significantly different except for a significant decrease in serum HDL level. There were significant decreases in intakes of energy, protein, carbohydrate, fat, phosphorus, Vitamin B6 and niacin and increases in intakes of dietary fiber, folic acid, Ca and K. Similarly, there were significant improvements on subcomponent scores regarding quality of life; physical functioning, general-health and vitality. However, depression did not decrease significantly. Overall the evaluation suggests that an 8-week weight control program of diet, exercise and behavior modification with supplementation of sea tangle would be beneficial to improve body composition, dietary habits, daily nutrient intakes and quality of life in Korean female college students.
