Heat Transfer Enhancement in a Tube with Circumferential Fins and Circular Disks

The characteristics of fluid flow and heat transfer were numerically analyzed for fully developed turbulent flow in a tube with circumferential fins and circular disks. Using a finite volume technique and RNG k-e model, the governing equations were solved and the temperature and flow fields were investigated. The various spacing and sizes of circumferential fins and disks were selected as important design parameters, and the effects of these parameters on heat transfer enhancement were studied. In order to quantify heat transfer enhancement due to the fins and disks in a tube, the Nusselt numbers for various configurations were compared to those for a corresponding smooth tube. In addition, the flow patterns and the overall and local Nusselt numbers were presented with associated increase in pressure drop, which gives insight into the physical phenomena. These results will be applied to the design for a condensing boiler, which were developed for domestic heating.
