Preparation of Mechanically Strong and Ultralight Three-Dimensional Polyimide Aerogel Composites

The via-polymer aerogels could overcome disadvantage of existing fragile silica aerogels. In the previous reports, aerogels were researched using various polymeric materials such as polyimide, polyurea and polyurethane. In our study, we synthesized the hybrid composites containing polyimide and silica nanoparticles as organic-inorganic materials. The polymer aerogels infrangible properties were improved by constructing back-bone consist of polyimide and will enhance mechanical properties of polymer aerogels by inserting silica nanoparticles into the polymeric structures. The hybrid aerogel containing large surface areas and mesopore were synthesized using sol-gel processing and dried by supercritical carbon dioxide drying. The pore size, morphology and surface area of aerogel were investigated by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy and surface area analyzer.
