A Study on the Combustion Characteristics for the Utilization of LFG

LFG can be used practically in many ways because the volume of CH4 gas amounts to 40-60 percent of it. However, LFG has a large quantity of inert gases and is different with other pure gases in combustion characterisics. In order to use LFG in practical combustors, fundamental combustion characterisics are to be studied in advance. In this study, flame stability burning velocity and interchangeability with the city gas were discussed. The calculation of LFG burning velocity using previously suggested formulae and numerical simulation results did not predict the experimental ones well. Therefore, the formulae and reaction mechanism should be modified to consider the inert gas effects on burning velocity. LFG mixing gas can be utilized as a substitute for the city gas, in case the heating value or Wobbe Index of LFG mixing gas were adjusted to the city gas.
