Range of Motion in Symptomatic Disc Degeneration with One or Two Level Severe Disc degeneration in the cervical spine examined Bby kinetic MRI

PURPOSE : Motion recovery or preservation in the patients for which variable motion-sparing device applied has been evaluated the data accumulated in dynamic x-ray. To be taken into consideration the situation over at least one level disc degeneration in whole cervical spine of adult, we need the data of the range of motion including disc degeneration. To settle this contradiction, Kinetic MRI studies can give us information on the dynamic motion according to disc degeneration. To establish the segmental motion including translation and angular motion and total full range of motion of the cervical spine in degenerative spine, the authors was to utilize Kinetic MRI cervical studies. Also, range of motion in potential candidate in arthroplasty of whom the patients included one or two severe disc degeneration was compared with those in normal disc in MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS : This was a prospective study on patients who complained neck pain and were studies with a cervical motion MRI study comparing the neutral views with flexion and extension MRI studies. We studied 168 patients with symptomatic neck pain with/ without radiculopathy. MRI analyzer in true MRI which included 76 point marked in each image were undergone automatically all measurement and calculation with regard to angulation for C1-C7 checked by Cobb and Harrisons posterior tangent method, motion segment integrity transmotion and angulation on each segment. According to grading system on the basis of the literature, two observers analyzing MRIs Graded 5 (Grade I to V) in each of cervical intervertebral disc on the T2-weighted sagittal images and the authors artificially bundled patients into symptomatic group with normal intervertebral disc (including Grade I and II in all level) and symptomatic group including one or two level Grade V. RESULTS : In symptomatic group including one or two level grade V the total range of motion could observed the 44.96 13.46 in Cobb angle and 35.09 1
