Genetic Variation and Clonal Structure of Two Populations of Phragmites australis with Different Soil salinities

Genetic Variation and Clonal Structure of Two Populations of Phragmites australis with Different Soil salinities

초록

The genetic diversity and structure of two populations of Phragmites australis showing distinct phenotypic adaptations to high and low soil salnities in a salt marsh were investigated using ampIified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) technique. Total 16 specific bands for each population were found in AFLP analysis using three primer combinations. A clear genetic mosaic was found in the clonal stmctlire of each population. The populations consisted of a few contiguous clonal individuals and of several individuals intern1ixed. The popuIation of high salinity showed more poIymorphic bands, more clones and higher genetic diversity than that of low salinity. Cluster analysis and ordination grouped the genotypes of shoots with different saUnities, with some exceptions. It is concluded that the soil salinity could be determining population-specific variations in genetic structure and ecotypes adapted to salt stress in a salt marsh
