This study aims to examine how dialectal forms have been represented in Korean dictionaries published since the early twentieth century. To this end, Chapter 2 reviews the treatment of dialects in Joseon-eo Sajeon (朝鮮語辭典) compiled by the Japanese Government-General of Korea Joseon-eo Sajeon by Mun Se-yeong, Urimal Keunsajeon by the Korean Language Society, Pyojun Gugeo Daesajeon by the National Institute of the Korean Language, and Joseonmal Daesajeon by the Academy of Social Sciences in North Korea. The analysis begins with the prefaces of each dictionary to identify their stated policies regarding dialects, followed by a comparison of how such policies were applied in practice. For the sake of comparison, special attention is given to the lexical item buchu (‘garlic chives’), which appears with diverse dialectal variants, as well as to geowi (‘goose’) and gesani, where South and North Korea adopt different standard forms for the same referent.
