A Design Approach for the Reorganization of the Old City Area in Incheon, Korea

The thesis intends to discover the meaning of "modernity" and the concept of urban interpretation through the examination and the re-interpretation of the city of Inchon and to execute a practical urban design project on the basis of the existing urban design theories. The area of old city of Inchon, particularly Jung-Ang Dong and Hang Dong, is selected as the site for the study. Based on the theory of 'Aura' and "Profane Illumination' established by Walter Benjamin, the study focuses upon investigating the essence of urban structure in a contemporary cities, synthesizing and expounding the significance innate within the site reflecting such an urban structure, and finally establishing an attitude toward contemporary urbanism accumulated through the design project.
