Objective : To know if the degree of cervical pathology has some associations with HPV infection, p16 and p53 expression. And to know if HPV infection has some association with p16 and p53 expression. And to know if p16 expression has some association with p53 in cervical neoplasia. Methods : Between July of 2002 to June of 2003, authors had done HPV tests with HPV Oligonucleotide Microarray DNA Chip (Biomed, Seoul, Korea), conization or hysterectomies to get the tissue, H&E staining, p16 and p53 immunochemical staining. Results : 41 patients were enrolled in this study. There were 16 normal cervical tissue (WNL) patients, 9 CIN patients, 8 Microinvasive cancer (MIC) patients, and 8 invasive cervical cancer (ICC) patients. The frequency of HPV infection was 0% in WNL, 100% in CIN, 50% in MIC, and 50% in ICC. The expression of p16 was 13% in WNL, 67% in CIN, 50% in MIC and 100% in ICC. That of p53 was 0% in WNL, 67% in CIN, 75% in MIC and 100% in ICC. When there was no HPV infection, negative staining of p16 was 67%, weakly positive was 13% and strong positive was 21%. But when there was HPV infection, negative of p16 was 29% and weakly positive was 53% and strong was 18%. In the case of p53, without HPV infection, negative staining of p53 was 62%, weakly positive was 33% and strongly was 4%. With HPV, negative of p53 was 18%, and weakly positive was 53% and strongly was 29%. Finally, without expression of p16, negative staining of p53 was 62%, weakly positive was 38% and strongly was 0%. But with weakly positive p16, negative staining of p53 was 33%, weakly was 42%, and strongly was 25%. With strongly positive p16, negative of p53 was 13% and weakly was 50% and strongly was 38%. Conclusion : As there were significant associations among degree of cervical pathology, HPV infection, p16 and p53 expression, there might be some possibility that expression of p16 and p53 induced by E7 and E6 proteins of HPV can impact on the cervical tissue to get pathologic.
