Porous Silicon Nanobomb agents for Cancer Cell Destruction Triggered by Near-infrared Irradiation

Porous silicon(PS) has explosive properties. In this paper we report for the first time that porous silicon, impregnated with an oxidant can be effectively utillized as therapeutic agents for cancer cell destruction. A solid oxidant was used in filling the pores in the PS as the solid oxidant in the pores would not react with protein as easily as liquid oxidants. The porous silicon particles impregnated with a solid oxidant and then dispersed in NaCl solution were poured on the cells. The cells treated with the PS agents exploded into fragments, while the surrounding healthy cells not treated with the PS agents were viable. The vitro cell test results confirm us that the PS-based nanobomb agents can destroy cancer cells without toxicity
