Comparative analysis of driving patterns and carbon emissions of delivery trucks in high and mixed-population density cities: A case study of postal truck in Seoul and Gangneung, Korea

초록

This study analyzes the difference in carbon emissions by comparing the driving patterns of diesel trucks in metropolitan versus mixed-population density cities. This research analyzes a historical postal database in Korea that contains the origin and destination of monthly postal parcel records to estimate routes of postal trucks in selected study areas: Seoul and Gangneung-si in Korea as representations of high-population density cities and mixed-population density cities, respectively. This study then estimates the carbon emissions of each postal truck by using MOVES-Matrix, a state-of-the-science vehicle emission modeling system, with predicted driving behaviors on routes. As such, the study is able to calculate the time-dependent link-by-link postal vehicle speeds of postal routes. This study analyzes the difference in carbon emission characteristics of postal trucks in different regions. This study is expected to provide both theoretical and practical contributions with providing better understanding of variations in traffic patterns of delivery trucks by regions and their carbon emission trends. Specifically, the result is expected to give a clue for delivery patterns and the carbon emissions of postal trucks in each region to set regional priorities for switching to electric vehicles.
