ASSESSING THE EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT FOR NURSES USING THE NOMINAL GROUP TECHNIQUE

AIMS This study’s aim is to identify nurses’ educational needs for financial management using the nominal group technique. METHODS The participants in this study were 11 nurses who had worked for more than 3 years in the hospital. Data were collected with the nominal group technique from 19 September 2012 to 26 September 2012. The nominal group technique with focus group discussion was used to investigate the educational needs of nurses for financial management. Participants were divided into two groups for focus group discussion. First, they sorted 55 cards of the contents of financial management for nurses by the degree of necessity they thought. Next, they discussed their opinions each other. Finally, they selected cards that they agreed all together using nominal group technique. RESULTS Group A’s participants drew the following conclusion. Before the group discussion, they chose 28 cards. After discussion, using nominal group technique, they finally selected 17 cards. Group B’s participants drew the following conclusion. Before the group discussion, they chose 18 cards. After discussion, using nominal group technique, they also chose 17 cards, but contents were not same. Finally, after synthesizing the results of two groups, 9 cards were selected by two groups’ agreements. That were ‘the basics of accounting in the hospital’, ‘the objective of financial management in the hospital’, ‘the basic concept of financial management in the hospital’, ‘the basic of financial management in the hospital’, ‘the comprehensive financial management in the hospital’, ‘financial statements’, ‘the comprehensive financial statements’, ‘capital financing of hospital’, ‘accounting and financial management in the hospital’. CONCLUSIONS Through this study, we found that nurses had educational needs for financial management. We suggest the results of this study will be used to develop the financial management education programs for nurses.
