Nutrition Knowledge, Dietary Styles, Drinking Behaviors, and Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome by Gender and Existence of Spouse in Korean Adults

Background and objects: It was reported that the practice of healthy eating habits and lifestyle after adulthood was related to the existence of spouse. The purpose of this study was to investigate the nutrition knowledge, dietary styles, drinking behaviors, and prevalence of metabolic syndrome by gender and existence of spouse in Korean adults. Method: Subjects were 37 men (10 with spouse, 70 without spouse) and 70 women (33 with spouse, 37 without spouse). Subjects without spouse were classified as single, divorced, and separated by death, etc. We gathered nutrition knowledge, dietary styles, and drinking behaviors by self-administered questionnaire. Waist circumference and blood pressure were examined. After collecting 12-hour fasting blood, serum triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and blood glucose were measured. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 20.0. Results: Scores of nutrition knowledge were significantly higher in men with spouse (11.8 points) than in men without spouse (8.1 points) (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference between women with and without spouse (12.4 points in both groups). For dietary styles, there were significant difference in scores of taste-seeking style between men with and without spouse (p<0.05) and in scores of wellness-seeking style between women with and without spouse (p<0.05). Alcohol drinking frequency of women was significantly different by existence of spouse; 56.8% of women without spouse were drinking 5-9 glasses/one time and 48.5% of women with spouse did not drink (p<0.001). Fermented beverages (p<0.01) and sugary coffee (p<0.05) drinking frequencies of women without spouse were significantly higher than those of women with spouse but water drinking frequency was significantly lower in women without spouse (p<0.05).
