Facile Analysis Method for the Purity of Titanium Tetrachloride

Titanium oxides have been considered as a versatile oxide owing to its wide range of applications, and the high purity titanium tetrachloride is strongly required as a raw material for the synthesis of TiO2. However, it has been known that the quantitative and qualitative analysis is very difficult for the determination of purity of TiCl4. In this study, we propose a simple method to analyze for both qualitative and quantitative properties of titanium tetrachloride. It was concluded that nature and concentration of solvent is very important for analysis of very reactive TiCl4. We employed herein an acid solution with various concentrations as a solvent for stabilization. The qualitative analysis was carried out by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). In addition, the quantitative analysis was conducted using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). We concluded that both qualitative and quantitative properties of titanium tetrachloride can be easily measured with specific acidic solvent.
