Many researchers have been trying to find anti-apoptotic materials. One of them is a purified 30K protein from silkworm hemolymph (SH). It has been reported that the 30K protein inhibited apoptosis of insect cells (Sf9) and mammalian cells (HeLa). However, the anti-apoptotic effect on normal human cells has not been known yet. In this study, effect of SH on human articular chondrocyte (HAC) was investigated. HAC was treated with 5% SH and a purified 30K protein. In order to confirm the apoptosis-inhibiting effect, apoptosis of chondrocytes was induced by using camptothecin. Then flow-cytometric analysis was performed. In our experiments SH and each fraction were found to inhibit apoptosis of HAC.
