The Historical Context and Characteristics of Hwang Buyong’s Design Activities during the 1970s and 1980s; [1970년대부터 1980년대까지 황부용 디자인 활동의 배경과 특징]

Background Hwang Buyong (born 1951) is a graphic designer who dedicated 33 years to the field from 1975 to 2008. Despite being somewhat forgotten after transitioning to painting in 2009, he was active during the 1970s and 1980s, contributing to the enhancement of design literacy. Recognized for his role in the modernization and professionalization of South Korean graphic design, the aim of this research is to study his design activities in the context of Korean design history. Methods Hwang Buyong’s design works and writings were reviewed, and several interviews were conducted with him. Reference materials for The Korean Commercial & Industrial Art Exhibition and the Korean Society of Visual Design (KSVD) were searched. Furthermore, newspaper articles, magazine pieces, and books were examined to comprehend the state of Korean design in the mid-20th century. This study focused on the period during which he was active from 1975, when he became a Recommended Artist, to 1987, when he left the Seoul Olympic Organizing Committee. Results Until the 1960s, graphic design was seen as applied art and commercial art, but it modernized into visual communication design in the 1970s and 1980s. Hwang Buyong’s design activities in this period can be summarized by his interest in foreign designs, the synergy of design practice and writing, exploration of new design fields, and active networking in the design community. Conclusions Hwang Buyong, with practical design experience and theoretical knowledge, emerged as a leading figure among his generation of designers, infusing the field of design with fresh stimulation and intellectual vitality. His design activities contributed to Korean graphic design and improving design literacy.
