An Efficient MAC Protocol for Multimedia Services in Wireless System : EPRMA

This paper proposes EPRMA which is a wireless medium access control (MAC) protocol to support effective channel utilization for voice, video and data services. And this considers traffic characteristics of each service type. Especially, the adaptive layer coder is designed to be an application in video terminal and generates basic and add-on data at different layers. Each data generated at different layers is transmitted with different priorities and access schemes. So it is possible to guarantee the specified minimum bandwidth for VBR service. Data service is guaranteed to meet the minimum bandwidth by reservation-based mode. After the successful reservation procedure, using semi-reservation mode, the data terminal extends its channel range by extended permission probability that is updated according to the buffer load rate of the data terminal. Other terminals of relatively higher priority such as voice or video terminals can steal the semi-reserved slot which was extended for additional channel capacity of the data terminal. The procedure of the extension and interception the channel capacity with statistical multiplexing algorith improved channel utilization and guarantees requested quality of service.
