The trend in the automotive industry has shifted towards making lightweight components, leading to the increased use of three-joint configurations in dissimilar materials. Consequently, self-piercing rivets(SPR) that are longer than the conventional 4 ~ 6 mm have become necessary. In this study, the joining characteristics of 9 mm SPR were investigated in three-joint configurations using aluminum alloy-aluminum alloy configurations and steel-aluminum alloy configurations. The correlation between the analysis results and specimen cross-sectional shapes, evaluated using SPR joining parameters, confirms the effectiveness of our proposed method. Our approach also verifies its applicability not only to dissimilar materials based on aluminum alloys but also to various materials, including BH210 steel. The proposed joining technique provides fundamental data for further researches on diverse dissimilar materials. Copyright © 2024 KSAE/221-08.
