Demonstration of all-optical flip-flop with single-mode VCSELs

We report experimental demonstration of all-optical flip-flop with a commercial 1.5 m wavelength single-mode VCSEL and observed hysteresis curve and polarization bistability of its output power as functions of the bias current. The repetition rate and switching energy for the flip-flop operation were 25 Mbps and about 14 fJ, respectively. Further improvement on the operation speed and switching energy reduction can be made in the future.
