Introduction to Development of CAS 500-1/2 Image Acquisition and Utilization System

Demand of high-resolution spaceborne imagery are increasing worldwide. In addition to on-going KOMPSAT (Korean Multi-Purpose Satellite) program, the Korean Government is developing a new earth observation satellite program, CAS 500 (Compact Advanced Satellite). CAS 500 is a standard platform with a total mass of 500 kg. CAS 500-1 and -2 satellites will be launched in March and November of 2020, respectively. They are twin satellites carrying identical cameras to supply 50 cm panchromatic and 2 m multispectral images with 12 km swath. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is in charge of primary utilization. The National Geographic Information Institute will operate CAS 500-1 and -2 Image Acquisition and Utilization System. Research for CAS 500-1 and 2 acquisition and utilizing system development started from June, 2018. The research includes automatic geometric and orthometric processing and several technologies for value-added products from CAS 500-1/2 images. The developed technologies and system will be installed at the National Geographic Information Institute. In this paper, we will introduce the goal and outcomes of the research. The whole system is divided by two systems: acquisition system and utilization system. The acquisition system will be consisted with 6 sub-systems. They are acquisition request, image receiving, storage management, standard image processing, precise image processing, and operating systems. The acquisition request system will scheduling the missions. CAS 500-1 and 2 images receiving station will be operated by Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). The image receiving system will collect directly the received image from KARI. The storage management system will manage received and processed data. The standard image processing system will process raw data to level 1R and 1G images.
