Due to global warming and urbanization, many disasters are occurring in South Korea. A quick initial response to such disasters is very important, and this response usually begins with a report from a witness and is confirmed by the central control tower through CCTV close to the disaster site. In this regard, this study proposes a methodology to quickly estimate the disaster site location using basic sensor information obtained from the reporters’ smartphones. Moreover, the impact of the number and locations of reporters on the accuracy of the estimated location was analyzed. Using the longitude, latitude, and azimuth information obtained from multiple reporters, the optimal location of the disaster site is estimated using the multi-vector intersection equation and least squares adjustment. Through the experiments, the RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) of the estimated disaster location decreases as the number of reporters increases. Moreover, the accuracy of the estimated disaster location is highest when reporters are in all quadrants and is worst when in one quadrant. In addition, it was confirmed that in the case of quadrants 1 and 3, where the reporters exist in opposite quadrants, or quadrants 1, 2, and 3, the accuracy is worse than when the reporters exist only in quadrants 1, and 2. © 2023 Korean Society of Surveying.
