초록

The carburization kinetics of high-purity iron foil were investigated in CO-H<inf>2</inf> gas mixtures at 1073 K using thermogravimetric analysis in a vertical induction furnace. Apparent rate constants were measured under various gas compositions and temperatures. The results indicated that increasing the hydrogen concentration significantly enhanced the initial carburization rate but also accelerated the onset of metal dusting. Microstructural characterization revealed a transformation from ferrite-pearlite to fully pearlitic structures, accompanied by the formation and subsequent decomposition of cementite (Fe<inf>3</inf>C). The decomposition of cementite into iron and graphite particles initiated metal dusting and promoted the formation of a dust layer. Furthermore, the removal of surface oxygen by hydrogen was identified as a critical factor influencing the overall carburization process. © 2025 Proceedings - ICSTI 2025: 10th International Congress on the Science and Technology of Ironmaking.
