Spatial tracking challenge for Augmented Reality on building construction sites

초록

Augmented Reality (AR) research for construction has consisted mostly of test bed demonstrations of how AR might be used to visualize planned construction or to inspect completed work. The tracking technologies used in such demonstrations have been impractical and susceptible to interference or obstruction, and performance is impaired under various environmental conditions. Real-time spatial tracking for AR in building construction environments involves unresolved challenges stemming from the expansive and partitioned nature of building projects. Site characteristics and task requirements establish necessary fundamental capabilities for a spatial tracking scheme that is reconfigurable for both indoor and outdoor use. After reviewing the requirements and available tracking technologies, the authors elect to pursue options for a hybrid spatial tracking strategy for navigation that minimizes cost and the need to install elements for a new support infrastructure on the project site. ? 2008 Taylor & Francis Group.
