The difference of knowledge, self-care behavior and glycosylated hemoglobin level according to diabetes education experience in diabetes mellitus patients

Purpose: This study was to identify the difference of knowledge, self-care behavior and and glycosylated hemoglobin level according to diabetes experience. Further, this study was held to examine how frequent type 2 diabetes patients had education on diabetes and their preferred methods of education and re-education frequency. Methods: The data were collected 166 type 2 diabetes patiens from two hospitals in Incheon. They were completed a self-administrated questionnaires. In relation to the level of gylcosylated hemoglobin, the data were collected from the patients' medical records. Data were analyzed by using descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test and multiple regression analysis. Results: 72.3% patients answered that they need re-education on diabetes and the average interval of re-education was 8.53 months. Patients preferred education methods were lectures, practical trainings, and studying from leflets. Depending on the number of times that the patients received education on diabetes, there were significant differences in terms of the level of knowledge on diabetes, and the level of self-care behaviors. As to how much the education on diabetes helped managing diabetes, there was also a significant difference in respect of the level of self-care behaviors. Conclusion: It is necessary to provide diabetes education with appropriate interval through the study results. Also, educational programs need to be developed to improve knowledge on diabetes and promote self-care behaviors.
