A reactive sintering process is a cost-effective approach to obtain γ-based titanium aluminides of high performance. In this process, elemental titanium and alumium powders, which are less expensive and more ductile than their prealloyed counterparts, are mixed and then consolidated by using conventional plastic working procedures. The consolidated mixture is then reactively sintered to produce a titanium aluminide. In this paper, a series of γ-based titanium aluminides was fabricated by a reactive sintering process, and the relationship between processing parameters/composition/microstructure/mechanical properties was presented. Oxidation behavior of reactie sintered titanium aluminides was also presented, focusing on the beneficial effect of chlorine that was introduced from raw titanium powders.
