When applying advanced operation strategies of heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems to actual buildings, challenges exist, including additional engineering costs, physical damage resulting from module customization, and firewall security issues. This study proposes a low-cost and non-intrusive implementation method of HVAC operations in buildings. The first method is infrared (IR) signal communication which can be applied to an air conditioner (AC) with a remote controller. The IR signal is identified with a remote controller corresponding to each setpoint temperature and then generated by a single-board microcontroller (e.g., Arduino). The second method is smart pusher which can be also applied to an AC. This method is applicable not only to the remote controller but also to the thermostat where the IR signal can not be utilized. Two implementation methods were configured and tested in real buildings. The proposed methods are expected to be utilized for any advanced HVAC operation strategies such as model-based predictive control (MPC) and machine learning-based control. © 2024 18th Conference of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2024 - Conference Program and Proceedings.
