The Accelerated Durability Test of the Constant Velocity Joint Grease for Automobile

The constant velocity joint is a component of a vehicle that transmits the driving force of the engine to the wheel. Lubrication must be maintained at all times because friction occurs when the constant velocity joints transmit drive forces Poor lubrication or change in viscosity of the lubricant inside the constant velocity joint causes wear on the constant velocity joint, causing serious problems with vehicle vibration, noise and vehicle operation. Many studies have been carried out to propose accelerated durability test conditions to check the wear and grease performance of constant velocity joints, but the test equipment has been large, time consuming and costly. In this study, to reduce the cost and time, the accelerated endurance test for constant velocity joint was converted into the SRV test to evaluate the performance of grease. The torque of the existing rotating durability test condition was switched to the equivalent torque. In addition, to reduce the test cycle, the acceleration index was obtained through the S-N curve and the equivalent torque was converted to the acceleration condition. To convert the conditions of the durability test to SRV test conditions, the torque was converted to a load, and RPM and joint angles were converted to frequency and stroke. The reliability of the accelerated durability test was verified by comparing the amount of wear of the constant velocity joint subjected to the rotational durability test and the wear amount of the specimen subjected to the accelerated durability test using the SRV tester. The operating conditions of the SRV tester obtained in this study can be useful in reducing the lifetime evaluation and testing time of the grease for the constant velocity joints.
