Theme and Variations: A Comparative Analysis of Two Housing Designs in Symmetry

초록

This paper will discuss an elementary account of the symmetry principle, in particular, the symmetry of the square, and then explore how it is carried out in the architectural plans. This comparative analysis of Wright and Schindler housings uncovers a consistent organizational principle, symmetry operations. Then it shows how design variations have evolved. The comparison will demonstrate that although their designs look different, both architects use symmetric transformations consciously to justify their housing organization.
