Mechanical Characterization and Prediction of 3D Four-directional Braided Ceramic Matrix Composites

As a kind of promising materials, ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) get more and more attention by the public, due to the excellent material properties and lower manufacturing cost compared to the traditional metal alloys. With the enlarged applications of CMCs, there are increasingly strict requirements on its material properties. Thus, the mechanical characterization and prediction of CMCs are very necessary and essential for the application and manufacturing. In this research, the mechanical properties of 3D four-directional braided CMCs were characterized through two steps. Firstly, the unit cell model in micro-scale is built to predict its material stiffness matrix. Then, the achieved material stiffness matrix is used in the representative volume element (RVE) model in meso-scale to predict the mechanical properties of CMCs. The research approach stated in this investigation could provide guidance for the pre-stage of CMCs manufacturing.
